Your questions answered:

Who is it for?

Parents of disabled and ‘labelled’ children.

Why do it?

You want your child to be welcomed, loved and to become an active member of the community. Facilitating, planning, organising, and making this possible for all children takes great skill and courage. This training recognises and values what you already know and will expand and refine your skills and understanding. It will enable you to share this with other parents and with disabled people.

When did it start?

The course started on Tuesday 20th January 2009.

How long is the course?

It will run for 15 to 18 months.

How much time will it take up?

You will need to allow 6 to 8 hours a week during termtime.

How much does it cost?

£50 per term. This money is paid into a community fund for the participants of the course to help with expenses, travel, course materials etc. Please let us know if you are not able to meet this cost. We may be able to help you find grants towards the costs.

What will you learn?

How to communicate well with other parents, professionals and young people. How to stand up for your child and their rights. A deeper understanding of Disability Equality and Diversity training. Tools for inclusion and community building. Relevant and current legislation including DDA, SEN and Human Rights. Group facilitation, helpline and training skills.

How will you learn?

We recognise different learning styles and offer different learning experiences: There will be interactive and enjoyable training days, some study in your own time, observing and apprenticing, self-reflection, and peer learning in a small group with your mentor.

How will you show what you have learned?

Depending on what you do best: there will be peer assessments, creating a portfolio of written or spoken work, photographs and pictures, and carrying out a small project. Most importantly: You feel happy and confident about demonstrating what you have learnt.

Who will support you?

You will become part of a small mentor group, which meets monthly to support you in your learning process and in demonstrating what you have learnt to others.

Who will facilitate your learning?

Trainers will be well recognised disability equality trainers, parent trainers and inclusion facilitators, including Micheline Mason, Richard Rieser, Colin Newton and Derek Wilson.

What will you gain?

You will gain nationally recognised credits, through the Open College Network and National Open College Network, which count towards entry to further or higher education and are valued by employers. You will be working at Level 2.
